Zhone Technologies’ Tellabs Access deal deepens its optical LAN capabilities
Key Highlights
- Zhone's acquisition of Tellabs Access boosts its capabilities in fiber access, Optical LAN, and broadband solutions for various sectors.
- Tellabs brings a proven Optical LAN platform, extensive customer relationships, and decades of networking expertise to Zhone.
- The deal aims to accelerate growth in government, education, healthcare, and enterprise markets while maintaining business continuity.
- Industry research indicates a strong growth trajectory for Optical LAN, with the market expected to reach $12.4 billion by 2026.
- Zhone's strategic reemergence continues with recent acquisitions and platform enhancements, positioning it against competitors like Nokia.
Zhone Technologies has completed its acquisition of Tellabs Access, strengthening its ability to serve as a key supplier of Optical LAN and broadband access network solutions for service providers, enterprises, and public sector customers.
In recent years, Tellabs Access has emerged as a key provider of Optical LAN and broadband access networking solutions.
According to the two companies, Zhone and Tellabs' combined capabilities will offer an expanded global portfolio of fiber access, Optical LAN, enterprise networking, and carrier-grade broadband solutions designed to help service providers, enterprises, and public sector customers modernize and secure their communications infrastructure.
Tellabs brings a recognized Optical LAN platform, an established installed customer base, extensive federal and enterprise relationships, and decades of networking expertise. The transaction enhances Zhone’s ability to serve customers across a broader range of applications while accelerating growth opportunities in government, education, healthcare, transportation, and enterprise networking markets.
Clayton Zekelman, Chairman and CEO of Zhone Technologies, said the Tellabs acquisition brings together “two organizations with deep telecommunications expertise, strong customer relationships, and highly complementary technologies.”
Zhone said it plans to ensure the acquisition will have minimal impact on Tellabs employees, customers, channel partners, and suppliers.
The company expects normal business operations to continue throughout the integration process.
Optical LAN rising
Zhone’s timing comes as industry researchers have forecast healthy growth for Optical LAN.
A recent Research and Markets report revealed that the “optical local area network market size has grown rapidly in recent years.”
The research firm notes the market is set to grow from $11 billion in 2025 to $12.4 billion in 2026 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.7%.
The uptick in Optical LAN (OLAN) adoption is driven by the growth of smart buildings and campuses, rising adoption of passive optical LAN, demand for future-proof network infrastructure, increasing deployment in healthcare and education sectors, and a focus on energy-efficient networking solutions.
From a regional perspective, North America was the largest region in the optical local area network (OLAN) market in 2025. However, the research firm noted that Asia-Pacific is expected to be the fastest-growing region in the forecast period.
Zhone’s ongoing reemergence
Completing its acquisition of Tellabs Access marks another chapter in Zhone Technologies' reemergence.
In May 2025, Zhone Technologies announced its acquisition of DZS Assets.
After it could not secure working capital from its current lender or any prospective lenders to sustain the business, the former DZS filed for Chapter 7 protection last March.
Since purchasing the former DZS assets, Zhone has been actively enhancing its traditional optical networking platform portfolio, as well as its PON platform, with a new set of line cards that deliver increased port density for 1G/10G and 50G services.
While Zhone’s movement into OLAN is timely, the company will have to face off against larger competitors like Nokia, which offers its Aurelius Optical LAN platform.
Through a collaboration with Corning, Nokia is set to deliver what it says is an end-to-end fiber-to-the-edge (FTTE) and optical local area network (optical LAN) solution.
