IT Norrbotten upgrades to 100G with Smartoptics ROADM solutions for open line systems

May 24, 2021
The ROADM open line systems will both upgrade IT Norrbotten’s optical transport network to 100G wavelengths but increase the fiber network’s flexibility.

Smartoptics says that, in partnership infrastructure consultants Miradot, has won contract to supply technology to IT Norbotten, a regional Swedish open fiber network operator. The ROADM open line systems will both upgrade IT Norrbotten’s optical transport network to 100G wavelengths but increase the fiber network’s flexibility.

IT Norrbotten is co-owned by Norrbotten County’s 14 municipalities and Region Norrbotten. Its open fiber-based network spans all of Norrbotten County to interconnect the participating municipalities’ primary nodes. Customers include various industry players, public service providers, and other regional operators.

To enable the 100G upgrade IT Norrbotten will receive elements of the Smartoptics DCP-R ROADM family, delivered via Miradot. The technology roll-out will begin in phases next February.

“When upgrading our wavelength network to 100G, our goal was to find a cost-effective solution that met our capacity requirements while also delivering the flexibility and openness that are decisive for us. That is precisely what the Smartoptics open line system gives us: a future-proof solution without vendor lock-in. The flexibility and dedication shown by both Miradot and Smartoptics met our expectations every step of the way,” said Greger Björk, Business Area Manager Network & Infrastructure at IT Norrbotten.

“Openness is a high priority for us at Smartoptics. Our open line systems, of which the ROADM family is an important part, are designed to offer a stable foundation for flexible and cost-effective optical networking solutions. By choosing these solutions to upgrade its regional network, IT Norrbotten has demonstrated how our offering appeals to network operators,” added Magnus Grenfeldt, CEO of Smartoptics.
