Arvig Communications opts for Cyan SDN and packet-optical transport platforms

Independent telco Arvig Communications has chosen to deploy Cyan’s Blue Planet software-defined network (SDN) offering along with the systems provider’s Z-Series packet-optical transport platforms across its Minnesota service footprint. Arvig will use the new software-driven ROADM/DWDM network to offer new optical services for business and educational customers.

Cyan asserts it won the business after what it called a “rigorous process” that combined an RFP with a extensive optical testing. The systems house says it won the business because of Blue Planet’s ability to support advanced planning and visualization applications as well as enable Arvig’s customers to enjoy visibility into their fiber-optic network services. Meanwhile, the new DTM-100G single-slot line card offered an effective way to support future 100G wavelength and Ethernet services, Cyan adds.

“We are pleased with the flexibility and operational simplicity the Cyan solution offered as compared to more traditional offerings,” according to Andrew Klinnert, director of network operations at Arvig. “We needed a reduced order-to-service-turn-up solution with improved visibility into each provisioned service. Cyan gave us all this and much more with the Blue Planet SDN system.”

Arvig has begun the network build-out and anticipates it will offer services via the infrastructure to its business, governmental, and residential customers by the middle of this year.

“We are excited with the partnership between Arvig and Cyan. Our Z77 and Z33s are delivering a wide set of business service offerings strengthening Arvig’s already impressive portfolio of services,” Cyan CMO and vice president of North American Sales Eric Clelland stated.
