Construction of Euroconnect-1 submarine cable from Norway to UK begins

The submarine cable network will have a capacity of up to 216 Tbps and will run between Stavanger in Norway and Newcastle in the UK.

Altibox Carrier and submarine network technology provider Xtera say that construction has begun on a repeater-based submarine cable system between Norway and UK. The eight-fiber-pair undersea cable will be part of a larger European fiber network, Euroconnect-1.

The submarine cable network will have a capacity of up to 216 Tbps and will run between Stavanger in Norway and Newcastle in the UK. Altibox Carrier will sell both dark fiber and capacity on the system. “The contract is now in force, and the system will be ready for service by the end of Q4 2021,” said Atle Soma, CTO of Altibox Carrier. “The new subsea cable has already attracted substantial interest from international clients.”

Altibox Carrier is part of a consortium, called NO-UK, that is backing construction of the submarine cable. Other consortium members include Haugaland Kraft, BKK, Ryfylke IKS, Green Mountain, Polysys and Hatteland Group.

“We are proud that the NO-UK consortium has selected our proven technology and collaborative project management approach for this full turnkey system,” stated Keith Henderson, CEO of Xtera. “We will be working closely with all stakeholders, including the permitting authorities, to deliver this critical infrastructure project on time and on budget.”
