CENIC adds new fiber network route from Sacramento to Northern California

The new 3.2-Tbps link creates a 260-mile regional loop from Sacramento through Colusa, Corning, Palo Cedro, and Chico before returning to Sacramento.

CENIC, which supplies services through the California Research and Education Network (CalREN), says it has added a diverse fiber network route between Sacramento and Northern California to its inland route. The new 3.2-Tbps link creates a 260-mile regional loop from Sacramento through Colusa, Corning, Palo Cedro, and Chico before returning to Sacramento. The nodes in Chico and Palo Cedro are new to CENIC’s infrastructure. CENIC says the fiber link will be available this month.

The fiber network deployment included upgrades at its Corning and Sacramento facilities, with the former enabling 100-Gbps capabilities. CENIC says it defrayed some project costs by repurposing equipment replaced during from recently completed upgrades on the service provider’s coastal route (perhaps this one: "CENIC upgrades California education network to 400G between LA and Sunnyvale").

“This new and diverse path demonstrates our commitment to provide reliable, high-capacity, low-latency network connectivity to our members in Northern California,” said CENIC President and CEO Louis Fox. “Upgrading our core backbone network infrastructure provides CENIC’s members with a more robust and efficient network on which to conduct data-intensive research, support teaching and learning, provide cutting-edge medical care, and enhance community engagement.”

CalREN provides fiber-based communications serves the majority of the state’s K-20 students, educators, researchers, and individuals at other public-service institutions. CalREN operates over 8,000 miles of fiber cable and serves more than 20 million users.
