Telefónica has contracted with Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks (ASN), now part of Nokia, to deploy the BRUSA submarine cable system. The undersea cable network will link Brazil and the United States across nearly 11,000 km.

BRUSA will link Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza in Brazil with Virginia Beach in the U.S. It will stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico along the way. The submarine network will strengthen Telefónica’s ability to meet the increasing demands of its wholesale customers as well as growing traffic from business-to-business customers, telecom operators, webscale operators, and end-users.

"BRUSA comes at a moment of continued interest in the Brazil-US route to reliably carry increasing volumes of data traffic as global demand for ultra-broadband access rises," said Philippe Piron, ASN president. "We are pleased to support Telefónica in seizing the growth opportunities of the global wholesale market and meeting its customers’ demands by making available our latest technology advancements in subsea wet design as an integral part of BRUSA."

BRUSA will add scale and integration to Telefónica’s existing global fiber-optic network. The company’s infrastructure includes more than 65,000 km of subsea cable, of which 31,000 km is proprietary submarine fiber-optic cable, which connects the U.S., the rest of the Americas, and Europe.
