Alcatel-Lucent enhances broadband connectivity for Telkom Indonesia

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it will build a 3000-km submarine fiber-optic network for Telkom Indonesia that will link the islands of Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua in the eastern part of the Indonesian archipelago.

The fiber-cable system will deliver an ultimate capacity of up to 16 Tbps through the support of 100-Gbps wavelengths. The network will boost broadband service provision as well as support new applications such as e-tourism, the companies say.

The system is part of Telkom Indonesia’s Nusantara Super Highway, which will see terrestrial and undersea infrastructure deployed throughout the archipelago. The terrestrial links and inland activities will be performed by Indonesia’s PT Lintas.

The new network infrastructure in the Indonesian Eastern Region will include a wet plant of cables, repeaters, branching units, and the 1620 Light Manager (LM) submarine line terminal equipped with coherent transmission technology. Alcatel-Lucent also will supply its end-to-end submarine management system, as well as project management, system design, marine operations, and system commissioning.

In a related announcement, Telkom Indonesia also has picked Alcatel-Lucent to build a terrestrial network in the Kalimantan and Sulawesi areas, as well as the greater Jakarta region, which generates around 50% of Telkom Indonesia’s data traffic.

The next-generation agile optical network, based on converged DWDM and Optical Transport Network (OTN) technology within the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), will enable Telkom Indonesia to provide 100G connectivity in response to the increasing demand for high-bandwidth services.

Bobby Rasyidin, Alcatel-Lucent’s senior executive in Indonesia, said, “With geography spanning more than 17,000 islands, Telkom Indonesia was looking for a technology provider to build a network foundation that can serve a wide territory cost-efficiently and effectively. The work Alcatel-Lucent is doing will help create a common platform for network capacity and efficiency that covers 200 million residents of Indonesia.”
