Regional operator Tele2 Netherlands has deployed the WaveLogic Ai enabled Ciena 6500 packet-optical transport platform, according to Ciena (NYSE: CIEN). The optical transport systems should enable Tele2 Netherlands to keep pace with growing network capacity demands arising for increased mobile video data traffic, says the technology vendor.
Tele2 Netherlands provides fixed telephone, mobile phone, broadband, and digital television services to residential and large enterprise customers. Mobile usage has proven a particular drain on its existing network, says Ciena, which has led to a network upgrade that will enable Tele2 Netherlands to deploy 300G and 400G wavelengths across most of its existing network. The new packet-optical platforms will increase potential capacity as much as 40X over the infrastructure’s original design.
“Our customers are constantly on the move, and making sure they are connected, be it via email, the web, social media, navigation, or any other application, is our top priority. With Ciena’s WaveLogic Ai technology, we can support our customers today and seamlessly scale for future applications,” said Meile de Haan, CTO of Tele2 Netherlands.
Tele2 Netherlands is part of Stockholm-based Tele2, which offers a variety of communications services in several European markets. Tele2 announced last December an agreement to combine Tele2 Netherlands with Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile Netherlands. Tele2 will become a 25% percent owner of the merged entity once the deal closes. The transaction is currently under European Commission review.
