Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: ZAYO) says it is enhancing it fiber network infrastructure in the UK. The fiber-optic network services provider says the upgrades, which include laying new fiber cable, will create a 500-km ring with access to submarine cables in both the Irish and North Seas.

Zayo did not name the submarine networks. However, several such submarine cables have been announced (see, for example, "Aqua Comms: Surveys to begin for North Atlantic Loop submarine network Irish Sea and North Sea segments").

The company says it will increase the overall fiber count on its existing optical network and add a pair of unique coast-to-coast routes to complete the ring network. Zayo says it will use the shortest possible physical paths in the project, which it expects to complete in less than a year. The company expressed confidence that it will quickly see a return on its investment based on existing demand from multiple customers (see, for example, “Zayo chosen by major global carrier for dark fiber in the UK”).

The UK fiber network upgrade follows metro expansions in London as well as Paris, Dublin, and Amsterdam. “Our continued expansion underscores our commitment to Europe and provides opportunity for customers who can benefit from our fiber network, data center footprint and extensive connectivity across our global network,” said Annette Murphy, Managing Director of Zayo Europe.
