UK rural broadband provider Gigaclear Networks has deployed a 100-Gbps fiber backbone network using fiber-optic network systems from Ciena (NYSE: CIEN), the optical communications technology company has revealed. The optical transport network will help Gigaclear to provide high-speed broadband services such as HD video streaming to business and residential customers in such markets as Devon, Somerset, Herefordshire, and Gloucestershire. The fiber network also will support backhaul connections from London to Bristol and Northants.

The fiber backbone network is based on Ciena’s 6500 Packet Optical platform. Gigaclear also will leverage Ciena’s Blue Planet Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) domain controller software for automated network and service management.

Gigaclear has focused its fiber to the premises (FTTP) footprint on 22 rural English counties. Its network covers more than 65,000 homes and businesses. “This investment reinforces Gigaclear’s commitment to bring reliable future-proof, ultrafast connectivity to both Broadband Delivery UK and commercial customers using its network,” commented Charl Tintinger, Gigaclear’s technical director.
