Colt to deploy Ciena's 6500 packet-optical transport system in Asia Pacific region

Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) says European-based fiber-optic network service provider Colt Technology Services will deploy its 6500 packet-optical transport system as part of ongoing core asset investments in the Asia Pacific region.

Colt delivers data connectivity, voice, and secure network services to more than 800 data centers and over 25,000 on-net buildings worldwide. It provides high-bandwidth network and communications services for enterprises, capital markets, and wholesale businesses. In Asia, it delivers connectivity to all major exchanges and specializes in low latency networks.

In September, region-wide deployment of the 6500 on the Colt IQ Network began, and will both accelerate Colt's growth in Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and other Asia Pacific markets, and further develop intercontinental connections in Europe. Most recently, the service provider extended its Singapore metro area network and began construction of the Hong Kong metro area network, which will deliver high-bandwidth capabilities to area enterprises.

Currently, Colt's Hong Kong metro area network brings high-bandwidth capabilities to Hong Kong based enterprises. The company expects the Singapore metro area network expansion to enable carrier-grade connectivity up to 100 Gbps with coverage to over 90% of Singapore based enterprises. SMEs and MNCs in various industries will have fast, secure connectivity to domestic and global markets through a single provider, says the company.

"Asia Pacific businesses are under increasing pressure to evolve their networks to support web-scale applications and cloud-based services," said Gary B. Smith, Ciena's president and CEO. "Leading operators like Colt are taking steps to help address this need by deploying new innovations that allow them to not only scale their networks, but add more programmability so that they can automatically adjust to meet changing user demands."

Colt will leverage Ciena's 6500 platform to support its IQ Network expansion throughout the Asia Pacific region. The company will use Ciena's Unified Management technology, which improves network control throughout domains and network layers, to minimize troubleshooting and guarantee resource use. The deployments follow Colt's announcement this past February that it will use Ciena's 6500 packet-optical transport system to improve the enterprise services delivery and data center interconnect capabilities of its regional networks, including the European and Asian markets (see "Colt deploys Ciena 6500 platforms in pan-regional fiber network).
