JDSU demos 40-Gbps QSFP+ optical transceiver modules

Sept. 22, 2011
At this week’s ECOC conference in Geneva, JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU) (TSX: JDU) demonstrated quad small form factor pluggable plus (QSFP+) optical transceiver modules for 40-Gbps transmission up to 10 km.

At this week’s ECOC conference in Geneva, JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU) (TSX: JDU) demonstrated quad small form factor pluggable plus (QSFP+) optical transceiver modules for 40-Gbps transmission up to 10 km. The devices are targeted at enterprise, local area (LAN), and storage area networks (SAN).

JDSU says QSFP+ optical modules for both short-reach and long-reach applications are currently being sampled with network equipment manufacturers and companies focused on high-speed computing. The company expects to have the transceivers commercially available by the first quarter of 2012.

Both the long-reach and short-reach QSFP+ modules transmit and receive four 10-Gbps streams in parallel. In the long-reach device, the four streams are multiplexed over a single fiber for transmission distances up to 10 km. The short-reach QSFP+ leverages VCSELs to transmit each 10-Gbps wavelength over separate multimode fibers in a ribbon cable across 100 m. The module will support both 40 Gigabit Ethernet and OTU3 implementations.

"Our continued focus on R&D and ability to leverage our industry-leading optical communications portfolio has allowed JDSU to leapfrog the market with these new QSFP+ modules," asserted Alan Lowe, president of the CCOP segment at JDSU.
