NOVEMBER 16, 2006 -- Meriton Networks (search for Meriton Networks) has been selected to supply high-speed optical networking equipment for the South-East European Research and Education Network (SEEREN2). SEEREN2 is led by GRNET, the Greek national research and education network, and involves the research and education networks of nine countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, FYR of Macedonia, Montenegro, Greece, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia.
SEEREN2 will integrate with the GEANT2 pan-European multi-gigabit network. It aims to ease the digital divide that still separates most southeast European countries from the rest of the continent.
SEEREN2 selected the Meriton 3300 OSM (Optical Services Multiplexer) to add capacity to its network infrastructure. The 3300 OSM was selected for the multi-phase project because of the following capabilities, the vendor says:
- Flexibility: The 3300 OSM's ability to support CWDM and DWDM is an attractive option for SEEREN2, as CWDM is deployed in phase one and DWDM is an option for future phases.
- Ease of management: Designing, deploying, and operating networks with the 3300 OSM is very straightforward.
- Future-proof investment protection: To address SEEREN2's ongoing needs, the 3300 OSM provides scalability since it interworks seamlessly with the Meriton 7200 OSP (Optical Switching Platform), which provides 320 Gbits/sec of switching capacity.
- Cost-effectiveness: The modular architecture of the 3300 OSM provides a low "first in" cost and can expand in a pay-as-you-grow approach.
"We applaud the efforts of the SEEREN2 organization, and are honored to have been selected for this project," said Bill Gartner, chief operating officer of Meriton Networks. "The SEEREN2 network is a critical ingredient to improving the commercial and scientific opportunities that will coincide with membership in the European Union."
