SEPTEMBER 15, 2010 By Stephen Hardy -- In a ceremony at the 2010 FTTH Conference in Las Vegas, Chuck Hartlen of Bell Aliant in Atlantic Canada was announced as the recipient of the seventh annual FTTXcellence Award. Ivan Toner, CTO of Bell Aliant, accepted the award on behalf of Hartlen.

The FTTXcellence Award, co-sponsored by Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW) and Lightwave, honors individuals for their contributions to optical access network deployment in North America.

Hartlen, senior vice-president of customer experience at Bell Aliant, was nominated for his work in his company’s deployment of FTTH infrastructure. Bell Aliant is the first Canadian carrier to connect an entire city with FTTH architecture. The carrier’s network, dubbed FibreOP, leverages GPON equipment from Alcatel-Lucent and fiber from Corning.

By the end of 2012, Bell Aliant’s goal is to have FibreOP deployed to over 600,000 homes and businesses.

In addition to the presentation of a Steuben glass statuette entitled “Innovation,” a donation was made in Hartlen’s name to One Economy Corp., a global non-profit organization that leverages 21st-century technology to help low-income families build assets and raise their standard of living. Ryan Justis, business development manager, OE Ventures, at One Economy, accepted the donation at the event.

“Chuck Hartlen is a passionate advocate for the benefits that FTTx provides to homeowners and businesses. His passion extends to ensuring that his customers have the best possible experience from installation to service and beyond,” said Clark Kinlin, president and CEO of Corning Cable Systems. “Along with his peers, we congratulate Mr. Hartlen on this honor.”

Billy Pyatt, vice president, sales and marketing Americas, public networks/OEM, at Corning Cable Systems, represented Corning at the event and presented Toner with the award on behalf of Hartlen.
