POET Technologies lands customer for Optical Engines

Sept. 30, 2021
Shenzhen Fibertop Technology Co., Ltd. has agreed to incorporate POET Optical Engines in upcoming optical transceivers – as soon as production of the Optical Engines begin, POET notes.

POET Technologies Inc. (TSX Venture: PTK; OTCQX: POETF) says that participation in a pair of Chinese trade shows not only offered an opportunity to promote its Optical Interposer and photonic integrated circuit (PIC) capabilities but enabled it to land a customer. Shenzhen Fibertop Technology Co., Ltd. has agreed to incorporate POET Optical Engines in upcoming optical transceivers – as soon as production of the Optical Engines begin, POET notes.

The company’s Optical Interposer platform is designed to enable integration of photonic elements such as waveguides, filters, and gratings, as well as passive alignment of lasers for flip-chip bonding (see “POET Technologies optical interposer platform for electronic and optical component co-packaging in single MCM unveiled”). The company has designed a variety of Optical Engines based on the technology (see, for example, “POET Technologies demos optical engines, CPO LightBar based on proprietary optical interposer”).

At the ICCSZ and CIOE conferences, POET demonstrated several of these engines. They included a 400G FR4 transmit engine demonstrated in connection with SiluxTek’s silicon photonics based modulator. POET says it plans to convert this two-chip pre-Alpha prototype into an integrated transmit and receive Beta product for sampling. The company also demonstrated its standard products (all of which are slated to teach Beta status “soon), such as a 100G CWDM4 transmit engine, a 200G FR4 receive engine, and three versions of its LightBar products, including one designed to connect four separate channels into a single multicore fiber (MCF) for 800G and co-packaging applications.

“Participation in these conferences and especially the live demonstrations made a tremendous impact on the optical ecosystem in China,” said Vivek Rajgarhia, president and general manager of POET Technologies. “We were already engaged with a few customers, such as Fibertop, and their commitment to adopt POET optical engines in their optical modules is a breakthrough for us.  Other companies requested samples of our demonstrated products, and several more want to either engage in development contracts that would incorporate POET Optical Engines in their products or have POET incorporate their components into POET’s Optical Engines.”
