Source Photonics’ 28G EML chip shipments exceed 2 million

Source Photonics says it has shipped more than 2 million 28-Gbps EML laser chips, which are used to support optical transmission in applications such as data centers and 5G mobile network support. The company says it has yet to receive a field return of any such chips.

The 28G EML chip family reached commercial production in the first quarter of 2020 in support of Source Photonics’ 10-km QSFP28 100G LR4 optical transceivers. The chips subsequently have found use in a variety of modules using NRZ and PAM4 modulation to address applications ranging from 50G to 400G. These optical devices include 400G LR8/ER8, 100G ER4/ZR4, 200G LR4/ER4, 50G LR/ER, and other optical transceivers. The company says it now is investing to support applications at 800G and 1.6T transmission rates.

Today’s announcement underlines our commitment and leadership in large-scale production capacity of high-speed EML chip and transceiver products,” said John Wang, CEO of Source Photonics. “Vertical integration remains Source Photonics’ core competitiveness. More than 90% of our transceiver products have transitioned to use our own optics chips now, including the newest 800G products under pre-production. We look forward to continue pushing the envelope to deliver higher speed EML laser chips for next-generation transceivers.”
