VI Systems intros 50-Gbps module using 850-nm VCSEL

Jan. 22, 2015
Optical component and module supplier VI Systems GmbH has unveiled the V50-850M, a fiber-coupled 850-nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) transmitter module that supports data rates of up to 50 Gbps. The company foresees the optical module used in test setups that support design of short-reach optical interconnects.

The V50-850M transmitter module features a V-connector for the electrical input signal; 50/125-micron multimode fiber terminated with a standard FC/PC connector is used for the optical output. The module measures 62.5x16.7 mm, with a height specified as 8 mm. The fiber cable length is typically 1 m, according to the company.

The maximum optical output power is specified at 6 dBm. The typical operating voltage is 2.4 V. VI Systems notes that test data for these specs was provided by the Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin; no pre-emphasis and equalization was applied, the company asserts.

VI Systems expects what it termed "a significant improvement" in performance with properly adjusted electric pulse shape engineering.
