12-channel parallel optics interconnects - at 10Gbit/s each

March 17, 2003
17 March 2003 -- Ulm Photonics, IC manufacturer Primarion, semiconductor manufacturer Microsemi, and fibre manufacturer OFS have demonstrated the first 120Gbit/s optical data link over 300m of multi-mode fibre ribbon.

17 March 2003 -- German VCSEL manufacturer ULM-Photonics GmbH, IC manufacturer Primarion, semiconductor manufacturer Microsemi and fibre manufacturer OFS have demonstrated the first 120Gbit/s optical data link over 300m of multi-mode fibre ribbon.

The results of this project will be on display at the upcoming OFC conference in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

The high-speed parallel interconnect demonstration included an unprecedented 12 channels of 10Gbit/s per channel at 850nm over 300m of multi-mode fibre ribbon. Until now, parallel optics applications have been limited to 40Gbit/s, using 12 channels at 3.36Gbit/s.

The demonstration used a Primarion PX 6419 12-Channel VCSEL driver, Primarion PX6429 Optical Receiver, Ulm Photonics ULM850-10-TT-C01x12 VCSEL array, OFS Laserwave 300 multi-mode optical fibre, and Microsemi LX3046 photodiode array.

"Together, this group has shown that interoperable component technology is available today to support the next generation of short-reach ultra-high-bandwidth optical links using parallel optics", says Ulm Photonics CEO Burghard Schneider.

"This type of cooperation takes a lot of the guesswork out of optical module design with proven compatibility of photonics and optoelectronic components."

The four companies say that they have demonstrated an interoperable components ecosystem for optical module vendors and system companies to embrace leading-edge parallel optics solutions.

Results from the 12-channel parallel optical fibre ribbon demonstration will be on display at OFC in the ULM-Photonics booth, number 4408.
