Fitel Technologies introduces high-output, 40mw continuous wave DFB laser diode
Fitel Technologies, Inc., a supplier of 14xx and 980nm pump lasers for the optical communications market, and its parent company, The Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., announced a high output, 40mW continuous wave (CW) distributed feedback (DFB) laser for long distance signal transmission in dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. The 40mW module is currently the highest power CW DFB made commercially available in the market.
The modules are in full production and are available immediately for delivery in the ITU-T grid. Fitel and Furukawa provide technologies to support signal transmission, including directly modulated and continuous wave DFB lasers that are essential components in WDM systems.
Typical output power for Distributed Feedback Lasers used in signal transmission currently vary between 10mW-20mW. The growing need to maintain signal integrity while compensating for the optical loss inherent during multiplexing & demultiplexing has driven demand for higher power DFB modules. Fitel's 40mW CW DFB helps to maintain signal strength when the module is combined with a Lithium Niobate modulator and wavelength division multiplexer. The resulting signal exhibits an extremely low chirping characteristic that enables long distance, high capacity transmission.
The module's low driving current (under 200mA, typical) and high spectral purity -- or side-mode suppression ration (SMSR) -- of 40dB provide both a cost effective and reliable method of signal transmission in high capacity systems. The modules are available in a full ITU-T wavelength lineup -- from 1500nm to 1625nm -- in order to support large channel counts and the growing reliance on L and S-band for signal transmission.
Fitel Technologies and Furukawa have a strong history in developing and manufacturing laser diode modules and 14xx pump lasers.
