US Conec says it is now shipping its PRIZM MT ferrule, a collimated beam, lensed MT style interconnect component.

The PRIZM MT ferrule extends the PRIZM LightTurn ferrule benefits of expanded beam Tx/Rx interface by taking multi-fiber lensed connectors to the equipment card-edge, says US Conec. The outer dimensional footprint is identical to traditional MT ferrules, which ensures the PRIZM MT ferrule is compatible with any MT ferrule-based connector hardware package.

The ferrule’s molded-in, hermaphroditic post and hole alignment features eliminate the need for costly stainless steel guide pins, the company asserts. The PRIZM MT’s no-polish, free-space, expanded beam design also obviates the need for the complex and costly end-face geometry and polishing control associated with physical contact array fiber-optic connectors, US Conec adds, while greatly reducing sensitivity to debris.

US Conec expects the reduction in the necessary ferrule spring force will make the PRIZM MT ideal for applications requiring mass mating of multiple ferrules in high-density trunk cables and optical backplanes. The ferrule platform supports up to four rows of 16 fibers each.
