For long-haul and metro DWDM optical-networking systems that deploy optical add/drop nodes and varying link budgets, the PGE60850 variable gain amplifier (VGA) provides flat response across a wide gain range of 15 dB. It features high optical power output of ±20 dBm, ensuring compatibility with systems having different link losses. For easy integration, the VGA has mid-stage access and supports up to 12 dB of mid-stage loss for dispersion compensation modules, optical add/drop multiplexers, and other high-loss optical components. It has excellent low noise and low ripple to enable efficient allocation of link budget. On-board electronics provide transient control that enables wavelength versatility and dynamic provisioning throughout the network. The VGA allows adding and dropping of more than 95% of channels with no impact on system performance.Northlight Optronics AB, www.northlightoptronics.com
The IQS-2700 tunable external-cavity laser (ECL) for optical-system and component-testing applications is housed in the IQS-500 intelligent test system. The small-form-factor laser-source module is available in three different configurations, including an S+C+L-band (1460– 1625 nm) model optimised for CWDM and fibre to the premises testing as well as versions for the C+L-band (1525–1625 nm) and E+S-band (1425–1525 nm). The C+L-band laser has high-power output for amplifier and network-element testing, while the other two versions come with a low-noise power output for both stopband and passband filter characterisation.EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering, www.exfo.com

Combining DFB performance with mode-hope-free tenability, the TLB-390X continuous wave tunable lasers provide stable high-output powers up to 20 mW over the entire C-band of 1529–1563 nm and without using semiconductor optical amplifiers. Their narrow 3-MHz linewidths, ±1.5-GHz wavelength accuracies, and excellent residual intensity noise of 145 dB/Hz are suited for testing a wide variety of DWDM systems. The benchtop instrument includes an integrated wavelength locker for 25-GHz channel spacing or higher, built-in DSP and control electronics, simple serial electrical interface, and built-in thermo-electric cooler. The compact devices have ±0.5-dB power variation (over wavelength and temperature), 2-sec wavelength switching speeds, high side-mode suppression ratios of 50 dB, and optical isolations of 30 dB. The output fibre is Fujikura Panda PM with FC/PC R-type connector.

Designed for SONET OC-3 to -48, SDH STM-1 to -16, Gigabit Ethernet, and Fibre Channel applications that require up to 2.5-Gbit/sec transmission, the uncooled DFB laser has very stable performance over the temperature range of 0° to 85°C and features a typical side-mode suppression ratio of 43 dB. It has a low operating voltage of 1.15 V and maximum rated power of 7 mW. The laser comes as bare die and in a TO-56 package. A vendor evaluation kit is available containing the necessary amount of lasers with itemised product verification data support as well as technical support from the factory and dedicated engineering contacts to assist in quick new-product introductions at the customer.Modulight, www.modulight.com
For cable TV and metro transmission systems, the NX8563LA series 10-mW DFB laser-diode modules from NEC provide an extended –20° to +85°C temperature range as well as bandwidth exceeding 2.5 GHz under small signal modulation conditions. Due to the intrinsic low chirp characteristic of the DFB design, the lasers are especially suited for digital transmission at 1550 nm. Based on standard singlemode fibre (SMF) with nonzero dispersion, the maximum dispersion penalty is <2 dB at a bit-error rate of 10-10 for total dispersion up to 1,800 psec/nm (NX8563LAS version) and 4,320 psec/nm (NX8563LA). Both versions are housed in hermetically sealed 14-pin butterfly packages with SMF and SC-APC connector. They feature an internal isolator and thermo-electric cooler for high efficiency and meet Telcordia GR-468-CORE qualification.California Eastern Laboratories (CEL), www.cel.comThe Optical Multiservice Edge 6500 can help service providers simplify their networks by converging multiple services, architectures, and layers from new or existing networks onto a single platform for service efficiency. It can speed time-to-market for optical Ethernet, optical storage connectivity, and other optical broadband services. Nortel Networks, www.nortelnetworks.com
The enhanced compact and portable SpecPro 4L fibre-optic polisher is designed to yield singlemode performance for low-volume cable-assembly production, R&D and medical applications, and field ..environments. Up to four components can be simultaneously polished, including industry-standard connectors, multifibre ferrules, mil-spec termini, optical bundles, endoscopes, and bare fibres. The polisher is also suited for repairing and retro-polishing damaged connectors. Providing AC and battery operation, it incorporates an independent suspension feature for more uniform and consistent polishing at each connector position. A video inspection system can interface with the polisher for inline viewing of fibre finishes.Krell Technologies, www.krelltech.com

FiberSwiper can help reduce the high percentage of service calls and product complaints directly associated with dirty connector ferrule ends that cause link loss and high attenuation values. It removes and retains oil, dirt, and other contaminants with one swipe and without solvents. The pocket-sized ..cleaner measures 111×57×10.2 mm and holds six cards that clean 13 connectors each (78 cleanings per six-pack). ESD material used in the cleaner's fabrication eliminates static when cleaning sensitive areas. Perforated cover protects each cleaning slot used, and quarter-inch spacing between slots supports all duplex-connector cleaning requirements. The cleaner can be private-labeled with company logo and color.

ClearSpectrum provides dispersion compensation and tuning over the full C-band, low insertion loss regardless of the dispersion levels, and a very small footprint. The fibre Bragg grating-based dispersion compensators offer flexible TuneX configurations allowing for a wide tuning range around different nominal dispersion offsets (negative, positive, or null). Also available for L-band operation, the tunable version is suited for the dynamic adjustment of dispersion compensation level in next-generation systems using very high transmission rates (40 Gbits/sec) or optical path dynamic reconfiguration. It can also be used as a variable dispersion emulator in test and measurement applications. TeraXion, www.teraxion.com.
The "rate-limiting" TC3220 10/100-Mbit/sec two-port fibre-optic Ethernet media converter enables service providers to control or limit bandwidth to its customers in ..increments of 64 kbits/sec. Power redundancy is standard, with options that include a two-way "one-fibre" version to maximise fibre plant usage and an industrial-hardened version for extreme environments of –40° to +80°C. The converter offers 152 incremental settings for 10 Mbits/sec and 226 settings for 100 Mbits/sec. Rate limiting can be applied on a per-port basis or input/output traffic. Also included is a built-in Ethernet switch that enables distances up to 100 km without additional hardware (e.g., switch or router). The converter provides 10/100-Mbit/sec auto-negotiation and automatically adapts to full- or half-duplex mode. Transparent to the network, it operates effectively even during high-demand traffic loads. It comes standard in a modular standalone/card version that fits into a 10-card rack assembly.TC Communications, www.tccommunications.com

Available with Windows 2000 capability, the FiberLine high-precision programmable optical CMM system measures critical dimensions on small parts in the manufacture of multifibre terminators, V-grooves, ..ferrules, optical disks, image sensors, and other optoelectronics devices. Such critical measurements include wafer linewidths, component positioning, and optical-fibre alignment with feature sizes as small as 0.5-µm. The system provides field of view measurement accuracy to 0.01 µm (10 nm) and point-to-point X-,Y-, and Z-axis measurement repeatability to 0.01 µm (10 nm) at 1 sigma (with 100¥ objective). Application programs are written using powerful text-based Measurement Control Language. Program files are easy to read and allow users to modify existing programs or create their own programs to control the system's operation. The XYZ positioning components and system structural components are manufactured from cast iron and granite for the greatest possible accuracy and precision.
