SEPTEMBER 25, 2006 -- VERTILAS GmbH (search for VERTILAS) is now sampling a new LC receptacle for 1310-nm that achieves data rates of up to 10 Gbits/sec. This TOSA is based on the company's Buried Tunnel Junction (BTJ) VCSEL technology and features an integrated monitoring diode. The typical TOSA power dissipation is as low as 30 mW, the company claims.

VERTILAS's VCSEL technology has been proven in several applications, including a variety of spectroscopy applications, the company says. For communications applications, full qualification and ramp-up is planned for the second half of 2007.

MergeOptics GmbH (search for MergeOptics) has successfully evaluated the 10-Gbit/sec performance of a small form factor module using the 1310 nm VCSEL LC receptacle. This laser component has enabled MergeOptics to develop next-generation SFP+ modules that provide 10-Gbit/sec performance and feature power dissipation of less than 1 W. Based on this successful demonstration, both companies will extend their collaboration to qualify and launch modules based on VERTILAS's VCSEL technology.

Dag Neumeuer, president and CEO of MergeOptics, stated, "A low-power, low-cost 1310-nm light source is a key component for the commercial success of our SFP+ product line. We have tested the VERTILAS VCSEL TOSAs in our laboratory and are impressed with the performance."

Christian Neumeyr, CEO of VERTILAS, said, "Our company has made a major step in developing a 1310-nm VCSEL TOSA for small-form-factor optical modules. In the last few years we have launched a range of VCSEL products from 1550 nm to 2050 nm, mostly for high-performance spectroscopy applications. It was now the right time to take our VCSEL technology one step further and develop a 1310-nm VCSEL for communications applications. By designing a complete TOSA with LC receptacle and integrated monitoring diode, we offer a solution that allows our customers to design modules with 10-Gbit/sec performance and significantly reduce power dissipation."
