24 October 2003 Phoenix, AZ Lightwave -- ON Semiconductor today introduced the NBSG16M--a Silicon Germanium (SiGe)-based, high bandwidth, fully differential receiver and driver with Current Mode Logic (CML) output. The device is the newest member of the company's GigaComm family of high-performance logic ICs designed for the telecommunications, networking, and automated test equipment industries.

Current-Mode Logic is one of the most convenient protocols for high-speed interfacing and is quickly becoming the protocol of choice for emerging, high bandwidth networking applications, explain company representatives. The NBSG16M simplifies initial conditions and connection termination with on-chip 50-ohm input and output termination. Like Reduced Swing ECL (RSECL), the small 400-mV signal swing of CML results in reduced power consumption. The irregularities that result from back reflection of signals later in the circuit--which is common to high frequency signaling--are minimized by the on-chip termination.

Capable of data rates above 10 Gbits/sec, the NBSG16M is the industry's fastest CML receiver/driver, contends the company. The device is ideal for high-performance applications in OC-192 applications. High-speed backplane interfacing is simplified with propagation delay below 150 ps and rise and fall times below 53Ips.

Like all members of the GigaComm family, this device features ON Semiconductor's AnyLevel technology that includes 50-ohms input termination resistors and accepts all major signaling standards--specifically Negative ECL (LVNECL), PECL, LVCMOS/LVTTL, CML or LVDS.

The NBSG16M is packaged in the 3-mm x 3-mm 16-pin Quad Flat No-lead (QFN), offering a minimum impact to board space and industrial-grade temperature tolerance (-40 ° C to +85 ° C. It is priced at $20 per unit in 10,000-unit quantities.
