JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU; and TSX: JDU) has unveiled PacketInsight, a software-enabled network monitoring offering that collects data from a variety of network sources and offers quick analysis -- hundreds of times faster than competing alternatives, the company asserts.
According to Jon Pelson, a senior director within JDSU’s Communications Test and Measurement business segment, carriers must sift through so much data to ensure proper network performance and isolate service issues that simply speeding up current processes and approaches won’t adequately meet requirements for long. With this in mind, PacketInsight is a rack-mounted hardware and software appliance that can accept data at rates approaching 10 Gbps from a variety of sources, including network taps as well as, potentially, the company’s recently introduced PacketPortal product, and sift through that data at very high speeds.
In fact, PacketInsight “rewinds” to points in time on the network and pinpoints quality impairment issues, the company claims. It can troubleshoot such network issues as intrusion detection as well as voice, video, and other application-level issues. It can use JDSU’s Signaling Analyzer Real Time (SART) or existing third-party offerings.
“The soaring number of connected devices and increase in streaming video, combined with the increasing demand for cloud computing services, require new network and service enablement solutions to remove unprecedented network complexity,” said David Heard, president of JDSU’s Communications Test and Measurement business segment. “To remain competitive, service providers need deep network visibility and lightning-fast troubleshooting capabilities provided by PacketInsight.”
JDSU says it developed PacketInsight in collaboration with communications service providers worldwide. The company has already received a PacketInsight order from a US-based Tier 1 network operator.
While the product is being managed out of the wireless end of JDSU’s Communications Test and Measurement group, Pelson says PacketInsight can be applied to wired networks as well.
