Lumos Networks, a Segra Company, has tapped ADTRAN (NASDAQ:ADTN) to supply 10G PON capabilities via the technology supplier’s ADTRAN Total Access 5000 fiber broadband platform. The rural local exchange carrier will use the new capabilities to better serve the demand for business services in rural Virginia.
Lumos is a longstanding customer of ADTRAN’s and began delivering gigabit services to its customers in 2015 (see “Lumos Networks offers second gigabit broadband FTTP service in Virginia” and “Lumos Networks extends gigabit broadband across its Virginia RLEC footprint”). However, it has seen growing bandwidth demands from municipalities, higher education facilities, teaching hospitals, financial services companies, government, and small business customers that has led to the current fiber-optic network upgrade effort. Lumos expects to begin 10-Gbps broadband services deliveries in the current quarter. Initial markets for the service include, Waynesboro, Clifton Forge, Covington, and Botetourt County, VA.
“The number of applications that require more robust broadband services continues to grow for both residential and small business customers, especially with emerging technologies accelerating network demands,” explained Lumos Networks Senior Vice President and General Manager Diego Anderson. “Our partnership with ADTRAN positions us to create reliable connections with our customers while delivering a level of distinguishing service and support over a fiber-based infrastructure.
“The initial product offering will include tiered symmetrical speed profiles of 2, 4, and 8 Gbps for delivering higher-speed solutions to meet evolving customer requirements,” Anderson continued. “We also anticipate increasing speed profiles in the future based on the flexibility provided within this platform.”
Lumos Networks was purchased by EQT Partners in 2017 (see "EQT to buy Lumos Networks for $950 million"). EQT brought the company, along with fellow service provider Spirit Communications, under the Segra banner early this year (see “Segra new name for Lumos Networks, Spirit Communications combination”).
