Ciena (NYSE:CIEN) has unveiled WaveLogic Ai, a programmable coherent optical modem designed to combine scale, automation and intelligence to enable self-driving networks for IoT, machine learning and on-demand services.
WaveLogic Ai is intended to improve transport network economics and flexibility across a range of network applications. It's designed to provide 400G single carrier transmission in metro and DCI applications, 200G and 300G reference line rates for backbone transmission in regional and long-haul networks, and 14,000 kilometer range in submarine networks.
Through open interfaces, WaveLogic Ai monitors and gathers networking data, including embedded real-time link measurements, to make intelligent capacity decisions in real time. For instance, WaveLogic Ai helps determine the optimal capacity for any path across the network and can tune to different capacity levels from 100G to 400G in 50G increments.
Other features include:
- A 400G-optimized technology engine to support 400GE and flexible client services to best match service throughput to line capacity
- Tunability via open software interfaces to help drive automated and intelligent decisions
- Real-time link monitoring information for network visibility and the ability to accurately engineer the network for optimal capacity and efficiency
WaveLogic Ai is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2017.
