ONI Systems opens Montrèal Lightwave Design Centre

Aug. 2, 2001
Aug. 2, 2001--The new facility, which houses an optical research laboratory, marks ONI's further expansion into markets outside of the United States.

ONI Systems Corp. (NASDAQ: ONIS), a provider of optical telecommunications systems for metropolitan and regional markets, announced the opening of its new Lightwave Design Centre in Montrèal, Quebec. The new facility, which houses an optical research laboratory, marks ONI's further expansion into markets outside of the United States.

Rusty Cumpston, ONI executive vice president of Engineering and Operations, said, "Montrèal's technical talent pool provides an attractive location for R&D expansion. When combined with the pro-business support and R&D tax incentives of the federal and provincial governments, the choice was clear for us to pursue expansion into Montrèal and the opening of ONI Systems Canada Inc."

At the Montrèal facility, ONI Systems will conduct R&D and also develop manufacturing test solutions for its optical networking products. ONI plans to staff its new office with approximately 50 people over the next year, with the opportunity to more than double that highly skilled workforce by 2003. In addition to the Montrèal site, ONI conducts research and development at its San Jose, California headquarters and at its first Lightwave Design Centre in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
