GlobeNet, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oi (Bovespa: TNLP3, TNLP4, TMAR3, TMAR5, TMAR6 and NYSE: TNE), says its submarine fiber-optic cable system that connects North and South America now has a capacity of 500 Gbps.

GlobeNet has just completed an upgrade that added 200 Gbps to the undersea cable.

The submarine cable system, which stretches more than 22,000 km, is designed for low-latency network services and 99.99% availability, GlobeNet says. GlobeNet offers wholesale services over the undersea cable system that connect Brazil, Bermuda, Colombia, the United States, and Venezuela.

“By utilizing our extremely reliable and high-capacity network, carrier and service providers will also be able to prepare their networks to handle the data and transmission for upcoming South American events, such as 2014 World Cup Brazil and 2016 Olympics to be held in Rio de Janeiro,” says Luiz Mario Alonso, director of engineering and operations at GlobeNet, who led the upgrade work.
