Telefónica’s Digital Deal promises fiber throughout Spain by 2025
Telefónica last week unveiled its “Digital Deal,” a plan to upgrade its fiber and wireless infrastructure “to promote the complete digitalization of Spain,” in the words of the announcement. Among other things, the plan calls for Telefónica to cover all of Spain with its fiber-optic network by 2025.
The Digital Deal is designed to reinvigorate the Spanish economy after the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic. Telefónica estimates that its effort could have an annual effect of approximately 1.8% of GDP through the 2025 end date. The Digital Deal has five priorities:
- Increasing digitalization
- Addressing inequalities by investing in digital skills
- Building inclusive and sustainable connectivity
- Ensuring fair competition by modernizing fiscal, regulatory, and competition frameworks
- Improving trust through ethical and responsible use of technology.
The company states in the announcement that “Digitalization is essential. With this Digital Deal, Telefónica shows that it is no longer enough to adapt to change, but that it must anticipate and lead this profound transformation.”
"We know the importance of the challenge. It is time to move from theories to facts for reconstruction; from the macro to the micro, so aid can reach people as soon as possible. We must be ready to take Europe's outstretched hand," added Telefónica Chairman José María Álvarez-Pallete.
Telefónica said its fiber infrastructure had passed more than 130 million homes at the end of June. This total was reached as the company deployed fiber in 6.3 million homes in the past 12 months.
