Champion ONE helps Syringa Networks deploy open architecture XGS-PON broadband network

March 8, 2021

Champion ONE, recently acquired by Legrand (see “Legrand buys Champion ONE, related brands for greater optical networking play”), says it and a leading supplier of open optical network solutions, has enabled Syringa Networks to deploy an open architecture XGS-PON broadband network. The deployment leveraged Tibit Communications’ MicroPlug “OLT on a stick” pluggable devices, which transformed 10 Gigabit Ethernet SFP+ ports on an already deployed switch into virtual 10G-PON optical line terminals (OLTs; see "Tibit Communications unveils MicroPlug 10G PON pluggable OLT").

Syringa is a facilities-based provider of fiber-based managed transport and voice services to business customers. The deployment of the pluggable OLTs will enable the company to deploy gigabit services to their small and medium-sized business (SMB) customers. Use of the Tibit modules accelerated and enhanced the deployment in three main areas, according to Champion ONE:

  1. Use of a modular, software-only management implementation enable rapid customization for Syringa Networks’ unique physical network
  2. Delivery of a pre-packaged set of management tools that interface with the architecture’s core open-source database
  3. Use of an operator-controllable open API toolset for third-party optical network unit (ONU) interoperability.

The deployment followed a lab evaluation process that accelerated deployment and service turn-up. Syringa Networks connected its first customers to the network within eight weeks of the initial discussion with Champion ONE, according to the technology supplier. More customers are expected to be added via this approach throughout 2021.

“We’re excited to contribute our new open architecture management solution to help Champion ONE and Syringa Networks realize this accelerated network deployment,” said Colt Lawton, managing director of North American regional accounts at Tibit. “Tibit’s newly released MicroClimate Management System (MCMS) provides several industry firsts for open architecture deployments. Uniquely, it opens the core database itself as a modular, open-source, and secure solution which can integrate with Tibit or partner-designed tools. MCMS also provides native third-party ONU support with open tools for carriers to flexibly add new ONUs as the network evolves.”

“Champion ONE is pleased to partner with Tibit to support Syringa Networks with an open 10G PON network,” added Tim Yanda, director of engineering at Champion ONE. “This commercial deployment marks a milestone for XGS-PON networks as it is utilizing the revolutionary Tibit MicroPlug and management system in an existing Syringa Networks’ switch to power the PON network. Champion ONE looks forward to supporting Syringa Networks as they deploy additional Tibit MicroPlugs.”
