Luminent announces family of coarse wavelength division multiplexing modules supporting 10Gb/s Ethernet

March 14, 2001
Mar. 14, 2001--Luminent, Inc. announced the availability of a family of 4 channel and 8 channel Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) modules designed to address the needs of the Metro Optical Ethernet market.

Luminent, Inc. (Nasdaq: LMNE) announced the availability of a family of 4 channel and 8 channel Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) modules designed to address the needs of the Metro Optical Ethernet market. Luminent's CWDM products provide optical networking equipment manufacturers a timely and cost effective tool in supporting the unceasing demand for higher bandwidth equipment build-outs in the enterprise access and metropolitan area networks (MAN).

This technology will be presented at OFC on March 20 at 1:00 p.m., in room 206B of the Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, Calif.

The 4 channel modules multiplex four DFB Lasers in the 1500 nm window to provide a family of products carrying aggregate data rates of 2.5 Gb/s, 5 Gb/s, 10 Gb/s and 12.5 Gb/s. These 4-channel CWDM modules support a variety of link budgets - from 3 dB to 20 dB. Such technology provides an economical approach to implementing 10 Gigabit Ethernet in a MAN by supporting 10km to 70km solutions over existing installed single mode optical fiber.

To achieve these distances, Luminent utilizes CWDM with 20nm channel spacing in the low loss 1500nm transmission window. This spacing allows for un-cooled laser operation, a high yield manufacturing process, and lower cost mux/demux technology; thus providing a complete cost effective solution for various data and telecom applications. The 8-channel module will offer similar speed and link budget characteristics.

Luminent is currently shipping this family of modules in volume to manufacturers in the metro access space.

Luminent is developing similar CWDM solutions to meet various data rates and link budgets in the 1300nm transmission window over single mode optical fiber. Luminent also plans to support designs that meet proposed IEEE 10 GbE standards.

About Luminent:
