Mar. 28, 2001--ONI Systems Corp., a provider of optical telecommunications equipment for metropolitan and regional markets, introduced its newest product addition to the ONLINE optical transport platform: the ONWAVE OC-48 SONET/SDH Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM).

ONI Systems Corp. (NASDAQ: ONIS), a provider of optical telecommunications equipment for metropolitan and regional markets, introduced its newest product addition to the ONLINE optical transport platform: the ONWAVE OC-48 SONET/SDH Add/Drop Multiplexer (ADM).

The new ONWAVE OC-48 ADM delivers STS-1 switching and grooming functionality within a circuit pack to eliminate the need for separate stand-alone boxes for sub-wavelength grooming. As a result, a service provider's operational costs can decrease because they can reduce space and power requirements, as well as manage wavelength and sub-wavelength services on a single, unified management system. The ONWAVE OC-48 ADM is expected to be generally available in Q2 2001.

The new ONWAVE OC-48 ADM, which is fully integrated into the ONLINE series of products, helps customers operate more profitably by lowering the cost per SONET/SDH service channel. Users will be able to provision multiple OC-3 and OC-12 circuits and groom and switch services at the STS-1 level, maximizing wavelength efficiency and service flexibility. Standard SONET/SDH services, such as full equipment and facility protection, performance monitoring and hair pinning, are supported, as are typical ring, point-to-point and linear network topologies.

The new ONWAVE OC-48 ADM can be used to terminate any combination of OC-3 and OC-12 ports up to an aggregate OC-48 capacity and supports up to 16 tributary ports. Additional tributary protection capabilities offer redundant equipment protection services to customers who have unprotected OC-3 or OC-12 interfaces. The ONWAVE OC-48 ADM supports either integrated STRATUM 3 quality synchronization or synchronization to an external BITS source.

Customers can manage the entire network including the new ONWAVE OC-48 ADM equipment under one common management platform using ONI's OPTX operating system. OPTX offers remote performance monitoring capabilities, automated network planning tools and A-Z provisioning for SONET/SDH services. With the ONWAVE OC-48 SONET/SDH ADM, carriers can combine SONET/SDH grooming capabilities and DWDM functionality on a single platform.
