Discovery Semiconductors now offers 50-mA and higher current handling, extended InGaAs photodiodes for applications at 1.2 to 2.2 micron wavelengths.

The company sees the new devices as ideal for use with high power fiber laser and frequency comb technology at 1550 nm and 2050 nm. Potential applications include both coherent and direct detection for free-space optical communications, frequency comb and fiber laser development. environmental sensing, biosensing, and wind LIDAR.

The new photodiode is available in three formats:

  1. K or SMA coax fiber-optic module
  2. surface-mount fiber-optic module
  3. within a Lab Buddy bench-top O/E instrument.

Discovery says it will offer the modules with multimode fiber options up to a core size of 100 microns.

"Since 2012, we have been commercially selling 2-micron photodiodes up to 20 GHz, FWHM of 20 ps, and current handling of about 10 mA for both coherent and direct detection. These devices have been widely used by the scientific community and it was our customer's suggestion to make a low frequency photodiode with even higher current handling. Today's new product announcement will meet our customer's needs," says Abhay Joshi, president and CEO, of Discovery Semiconductor.
