Eoptolink demos 800G OSFP DR8 optical transceiver featuring thin-film lithium niobate modulator

Eoptolink Technology Inc., Ltd. (SZSE: 300502) used last week’s OFC 2022 in San Diego to demonstrate an 800G OSFP DR8 optical transceiver that leverages a modulator based on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) technology. The demonstration was part of the company’s show theme of low-power 400G and 800G optical modules.

The 800G OSFP used TFLN technology from startup HyperLight (see “Startup HyperLight debuts thin-film Lithium Niobate platform at ECOC 2021”). Andy Bechtolsheim, founder, chief development officer, and chairman of Arista Networks, highlighted the device during a presentation at the Optica Executive Forum on March 7. Eoptolink touted the device’s low insertion loss and ability to enable direct modulator drive from the DSP as benefits and described the module as “a possible direction in which the industry is heading.”

The demonstration complemented Eoptolink’s ongoing work in 400G and 800G optical transceivers. The company says it is developing a fourth generation of its 400G family and demonstrated a 400G QSFP-DD DR4 transceiver with <7 W of power consumption. The company cited subcomponents with better performance, enhanced integration, and new manufacturing process as steppingstones toward the low power figure.

Meanwhile, the company also showed off 800G optical transceivers with conventional modulator technology. The optical modules consume less than 16 W and are available in versions based on silicon photonics and EMLs. The company says it has 800G modules that are generally available.

“Eoptolink has the largest portfolio of single mode 400G and 800G modules on the market and our customers constantly demand cost and power reductions,” asserted Sean Davies, director of sales for the Americas at Eoptolink. “Customers have grown to rely on our quality and reliability, and it is these principles that have allowed us to further expand our 400G and 800G portfolio.”
