Coriant says it will supply elements of its Coriant CloudWave Optics portfolio to Australia's nbn. nbn is responsible for building and operating Australia's national broadband network; the operator will use the new optical transmission technology to upgrade its nationwide Transit Network fiber backbone network.

The Transit Network uses more than 60,000 km of fiber. The fiber-optic network connects access nodes to 121 points of interconnect (POI), where traffic is transferred to service providers. The access nodes can be thousands of kilometers from their corresponding POI, Coriant reports.

The upgrade will see Coriant CloudWave Optics technology applied to the hiT 7300 platforms already installed in the Transit Network (see "NBN Co adds more Coriant optical transport gear to Australia’s National Broadband Network"). Use of the coherent transmission technology will support transmission rates of 200 Gbps and greater; Coriant asserts nbn will be able to increase capacity to up to 45 Tbps per fiber link while reducing capexa dn opex thanks to reduced footprint requirements and power consumption alongside greater throughput density.

"Coriant's CloudWave solution will help us in scaling the nbn and connecting 8 million happy homes by 2020," said Peter Ryan, Chief Network Engineering Officer at nbn. "Maximizing the performance of our fiber-optic infrastructure is critical as we expand the capacity of the nbn network throughout Australia and enable residential and business customers to take full advantage of fast and reliable broadband."
