Aricent offers SDvAS SDN software for open OLTs

Aricent has launched a suite of software frameworks it calls the SDN-enabled virtualized Access Solution (SDvAS) for use with open broadband access network systems. The company says one element of the suite, the SDvAS Virtual OLT (vOLT) framework, is now available and pre-integrated on open white box optical line terminal (OLT) platforms from Edgecore Networks.

Targeted at original device manufacturers (ODMs) such as Edgecore Networks and available in source-code-based licensing models, the Aricent SDvAS suite includes support for SD-WAN universal CPEs (uCPE), vOLTs, Aricent Fast Path Accelerator (FPA) based virtual routers (vRouters), virtual CPE (vCPE), virtualized broadband network gateways (vBNGs), and SDN applications for network service provisioning and assurance. SDvAS supports a variety of deployment scenarios, from ODM platforms to virtual network functions (VNFs) deployable as virtual machines (VMs) and containers on x86 compute nodes with hardware acceleration offload support, and VNF life cycle management and orchestration by Aricent maintenance and network operations (MANO). SDvAS has been built on Aricent’s ISS control plane, which the company says has been used on DSLAMs, OLTs, and Carrier Ethernet aggregation, service edge, mobile backhaul, and packet-optical transport systems.

The vOLT software framework supports disaggregated OLT architectures based on the ONF R-CORD model. It leverages the ONF R-CORD VOLTHA framework and OpenOLT drivers. The framework is now available on the Edgecore ASXvOLT16 open 10G-PON OLT platform (see “Edgecore Networks offers ASXvOLT16 whitebox PON OLT design to Open Compute Project”). Aricent says the SDvAS software also will support Edgecore’s recently announced GPON OLT platforms, the ASGvOLT32 and ASGvOLT64 (see “Edgecore Networks touts disaggregated 10G PON, GPON OLTs”). The OLTs conform to specifications contributed to the Open Compute Project (OCP).

“Edgecore has been working closely with leading service providers worldwide, and with the OCP, ONF, and TIP communities, to offer disaggregated hardware products that enable open network deployments for broadband access, edge computing, mobile backhaul, and edge switching use cases,” said Mark Basham, vice president, business development, at Edgecore. “We are pleased to have Aricent in our partner ecosystem and their solutions available on Edgecore open networking platforms.”
