Atlantic Broadband is boosting Internet speeds as part of its $6.3 million "FastForward Miami" initiative. Announced in July, the project involves network infrastructure and service enhancements in Miami Beach and surrounding areas including Aventura, Bal Harbour, Bay Harbor Islands, Golden Beach, North Bay Village, Pinecrest, South Miami, Sunny Isles Beach, and Surfside, plus Brickell, the Biscayne corridor and downtown Miami.

Residential and business customers now have access to Internet speeds of up to 250 Mbps. In addition, all current Internet subscribers will see an increase in speeds over the next few months. The launch of gigabit speeds is planned for August 2017.

Atlantic Broadband plans to use DOCSIS 3.1 to enable wide availability of gigabit Internet to residences and businesses in its south Florida footprint; however, it also has and will continue to utilize fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) in targeted applications such as MDUs where it makes sense. In September, the company launched DOCSIS 3.1 gigabit service in several of its Connecticut markets, based on network gear from Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) and CPE from ARRIS (NASDAQ:ARRS).

"Atlantic Broadband is excited to deliver an even more robust suite of products and services in the Miami Beach area we serve. The speed increases we are introducing today will bring immediate benefits to residential and business customers, and the future will bring even more exciting products and services," said Atlantic Broadband's Vice President and General Manager Elizabeth Michelsen.

Residential Internet packages start at $29.99/month, and business packages start at $59.99/month. Both offer downstream speeds from 25 Mbps to 250 Mbps.

Longer term "FastForward Miami" plans include:

  • Wide availability of 1 Gbps Internet service
  • The addition of 58 SD and/or HD channels, bringing the total channel count to more than 400
  • More Spanish language and international channels
  • Upgraded digital picture quality and sound
  • A new on-screen guide on all TV sets
