AppliedMicro unveils standard 100G OTN muxponder

DECEMBER 16, 2010 -- Applied Micro Circuits Corp. (AppliedMicro; Nasdaq: AMCC) has announced what it calls the first standard 100 Gbps muxponder (multiplexing transponder) offering for Optical Transport Network (OTN) applications.

(AppliedMicro; Nasdaq: AMCC) has announced what it calls the first standard 100 Gbps muxponder (multiplexing transponder) offering for Optical Transport Network (OTN) applications. The 100G muxponder is designed to multiplex any combination of 10G and 40G client signals into a 100G OTN signal (OTU4).

The muxponder design combines AppliedMicro’s TPO404 OTU4 multiplexer and PQ60T 10-40G mapper/framer with a common application programming interface (API) that enables efficient integration and maintenance efforts for equipment vendors, the company says. The 100G Muxponder is designed to support any combination of signals from 10G and 40G Ethernet to legacy OC-192/OC-768 SONET/SDH, as well as 8G and 10G Fibre Channel. It also provides interoperability with all major forward error correction (FEC) schemes in long-haul optical network architectures, the AppliedMicro adds.

“AppliedMicro provides a common software API for both its SoftSilicon and ASSP solutions which makes it efficient to integrate system software and maintenance efforts onto one platform or line card,” said Lars Pedersen, CTO of AppliedMicro’s TPACK A/S subsidiary. “System design for 100G platforms is greatly simplified and streamlined with a common API, and it provides software investment protection for future muxponder upgrades as AppliedMicro’s highly integrated silicon devices come to market offering even greater cost-reduction potential.”

AppliedMicro also offers reference platforms for 100G blades and systems.
