Ciena supplies packet-optical transport system to RVBA municipal networks

April 25, 2016
Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) says it supplied its 6500 Packet-Optical Platform and 3904 and 3942 Service Delivery Switches  for the recently completed municipal networks the Roanoke Valley Broadband Authority (RVBA) deployed in Roanoke and Salem, VA.

The RVBA announced completion of the 47 miles of metro fiber-optic network infrastructure earlier this month (see "Roanoke Valley Broadband Authority lays fiber-optic cable in Roanoke and Salem"). The open access network will serve more than 200 business parks, institutions, government facilities, and businesses beginning this May 1. It also will provide mobile backhaul for wireless carriers in the region.

Walker and Associates, a Ciena BizConnect partner, provided consultation, engineering, and design services for the deployment. With the ability to scale to 200-Gbps wavelengths, the network will offer transport speeds greater than typical networks in the region, Ciena adds.

"The Roanoke Valley Broadband Authority was established to help provide our citizens and businesses with greater access to high-speed connectivity – a critical component to making sure we are not left out of the ongoing digital revolution. By working with Ciena we are able to provide our community with new communications capabilities to support high-bandwidth applications and services," said Frank M. Smith II, president and CEO of the RVBA.

In addition to the systems hardware, Ciena also will supply its Remote NOC Management Services to aid service provisioning.
