Virgin Media Business has deployed the XTM Series from Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) and is using it deliver its Flexi Filter service to UK wholesale customers, the two companies say. Flexi Filter is a managed wavelength services offering through which customers can access optical filter ports directly to scale their DWDM access infrastructure.

The business services provider, a unit of the cable MSO Virgin Media, operates a 186,000-km UK network that links 162 voice telephony switches and 330 Ethernet points of presence. Virgin Business Media foresees its mobile operator, internet service provider, and other network operator customers using 10-Gbps and 100-Gbps Flexi Filter managed services to extend their fiber-based footprints deeper into access networks, particularly for 5G cell tower backhaul. Customers can choose from several managed service types to add capacity as needed.

“Introducing Flexi Filter gives our customers and partners the flexibility, scalability, and control they need,” said Andrew Halliwell, product director at Virgin Media Business. “Infinera’s innovative solutions and modular XTM Series technology overcome traditional connectivity constraints and free up resources so customers can focus on delivering extraordinary outcomes for their business.”

Infinera says Virgin Media has deployed the XTM Series widely throughout the UK (see "Virgin Media selects Transmode as preferred supplier for metro optical WDM"; Infinera bought Transmode in 2015) – and Virgin parent company Liberty Global has done the same across its pan-European network.
