Seoul Viosys 25-Gbps VCSEL diodes now in production

Seoul Viosys (KOSDAQ: 092190) of South Korea says its 25-Gbps vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) diodes are in mass production. The near-field-only devices will support 5G fronthaul and midhaul requirements for transmitting and receiving as well as other applications. The company says it already has three customers for the laser diodes.

The 25-Gbps VCSEL supports single-channel and multi-channel implementations. Seoul Viosys notes that a 4x25G implementation will support 100-Gbps requirements such as those seen in the data center and, eventually, 5G xhaul networks. VCSELs at lower transmission rates have already found wide use in optical communications, and the company predicts that 25G VCSELs will follow the same path.

The company also plans to have VCSELs for sensor applications in production by the end of this quarter.

“As the paradigm shift has progressed in the recent noncontact era, interest in VCSEL technology is growing, since it is a critical technology for implementing the Internet of Things (IoT) environment. Seoul Viosys will continue to research and develop the VCSEL technology to expand and apply our differentiated VCSELs to 5G communication-based smart cities, autonomous driving applications, AR/VR, and industrial IoT markets,” said an official at Seoul Viosys.

Established in 2002 as a subsidiary of Seoul Semiconductor, Seoul Viosys also manufactures UV LEDs. It entered the VCSEL market through its 2018 acquisition of RayCan.
